Reading Thermal Images Like a Pro

Reflections, shiny surfaces, and auto-scaling fool almost every first-timer. Ten minutes here saves you from chasing ghosts.

Rule one: you see surfaces, not insides

A thermal camera reads the temperature of the first surface in its line of sight — nothing behind it. When it seems to "see inside a wall," what’s really happening is that something inside (a missing batt of insulation, a wet patch, a hot wire) has changed the temperature of the drywall surface in a recognizable pattern.

That distinction sets your expectations correctly: you’re reading symptoms on the surface and inferring causes. Strong, repeatable patterns are meaningful. Faint one-off smudges usually aren’t.

The mirror problem: shiny things lie

Matte surfaces — drywall, wood, brick, fabric — report their temperature honestly. Shiny surfaces don’t. Polished metal, stainless appliances, glass, glossy tile, and even semi-gloss paint at a shallow angle behave like mirrors at thermal wavelengths: they show you a reflection of whatever warm thing is nearby. Usually, that warm thing is you.

The test is simple and satisfying: move two steps sideways. A real hot spot stays anchored to the surface. A reflection slides across it, following you like your reflection in a shop window. Do this every time a shiny object looks alarming.

Auto-scaling: why a boring wall looks dramatic

The camera continuously stretches its color palette across whatever temperature range is in frame. Frame a wall that varies by two degrees and those two degrees get the full purple-to-yellow treatment. This is by design — it’s what makes subtle patterns visible — but it means color intensity alone never tells you how big a problem is.

Anchor yourself with the crosshair. Measure the suspicious spot, measure a normal area of the same surface, and subtract. Inside rooms, differences under about 2°F are usually noise or trivial variation; 4°F+ in a defined shape is worth photographing; 10°F+ in winter is a finding you’ll want to act on.

Patterns are the language

With surfaces and scaling understood, diagnosis becomes pattern recognition. Sharp-edged rectangles between framing are insulation voids — construction is rectangular, so construction problems are too. Streaks and plumes that trail away from a joint are moving air. Irregular blotches with soft, feathered edges are moisture. Crisp vertical stripes on 16-inch centers are just studs doing what studs do.

A note on humility (and why we say “educational”)

A thermal image is a clue, not a verdict. Wet-looking blotches get confirmed with a moisture meter. Warm breakers get a licensed electrician’s eyes. Insulation voids can be verified by an insulation contractor before you pay for remediation. The camera’s superpower is telling you exactly where to look and what question to ask — that alone routinely saves hundreds of dollars in guesswork.

The five-second sanity check

  • Is the surface shiny? Step sideways — does the spot move?
  • Check the scale: how many degrees does the palette span?
  • Measure spot vs. normal area — is the difference over 4°F?
  • Does the shape match construction (rectangles, lines) or something organic?
  • Can you reproduce it from a second angle?
