Electrical Hot Spots, Appliances & Other Wins

The breaker panel — carefully
Electrical resistance makes heat, and failing connections make more of it than healthy ones — which is why thermal scanning is a standard tool of professional electrical inspection. Your version of it is simple and safe: with the panel cover ON, run some real load (dryer, oven, space heater) for fifteen minutes, then scan the panel face.
What you’re looking for is asymmetry. Breakers under load run warm as a group; the finding is one breaker or one spot glowing clearly hotter than everything around it — especially if the circuit behind it isn’t doing anything special. Photograph it, note which circuit it is from the panel schedule, and show an electrician.
Outlets, switches, and cords
Sweep the outlets and switches you use hardest, plus anywhere a space heater, window AC, or EV charger plugs in. A working outlet under load can be mildly warm; an outlet glowing through the wall plate, or a warm patch on the wall along a cable run, is a finding. Cheap power strips feeding big loads are a repeat offender — scan those too.
Appliances that are quietly wasting money
Refrigerator and freezer door seals fail gradually and invisibly — until you scan them. A healthy door shows a uniform edge; a failed gasket section shows cold bleeding out in a bright (dark, in winter palettes) arc, which means the compressor is running overtime around the clock.
While you’re at it: scan your water heater (a well-insulated tank shows barely any signature; a glowing one is begging for an insulation blanket), your oven door seal mid-preheat, and your dryer duct for leaks while it runs.
Mapping the invisible house
Run the furnace ten minutes and every supply duct paints its route across ceilings and walls — no more guessing which soffit hides the trunk line before a renovation. The same trick maps hot-water pipe runs, buried radiator feeds, and (running the AC) which ducts are leaking conditioned air into the attic instead of your bedrooms.
Pets, wildlife, and after-dark searches
A warm body against a cool background is the easiest thing a thermal camera does. At dusk or after dark, sweep slowly under decks, along fence lines, and into crawl spaces — a cat reads as an unmistakable bright shape long before a flashlight would find eyeshine. The same goes for figuring out where squirrels are getting into the eaves (look for the warm exit hole at dusk).
Physics disclaimer for managing expectations: thermal cannot see through walls, dense brush, or glass. What it does is make any warm animal in line-of-sight impossible to miss in full darkness.
