Getting Started with the FLIR C3-X
From pickup to your first useful thermal image in ten minutes — controls, technique, and how to capture findings worth keeping.

The thirty-second tour
Hold the power button on top for two seconds and the C3-X wakes into live thermal view. Everything else happens on the 3.5-inch touchscreen: tap the on-screen shutter (or squeeze the physical trigger on the grip) to capture an image, swipe to review what you’ve taken, and tap the back arrow to return to live view.
The camera blends its thermal image with a visible-light photo — FLIR calls this MSX. It traces the edges of door frames, outlets, and labels in faint white lines over the heat picture, so you always know exactly what you’re looking at. You never need to switch this on; it’s the default, and it’s the reason your images will be readable next week and not just colorful blobs.
How to read the screen
Two numbers matter. The spot temperature in the corner tells you the temperature exactly under the center crosshair — aim it like a laser pointer. The scale on the right edge shows the range of temperatures in the current frame: the brightest color on screen equals the top number, the darkest equals the bottom.
The scale re-stretches itself every time you move. Point at a mild wall and a 2°F difference will span the whole palette, looking dramatic; point at a wood stove and that same wall turns uniformly dark. This auto-ranging is the single most misunderstood thing about thermal cameras. The colors are always relative — the numbers are what’s absolute.
Technique: sweep slow, shoot square
Work a room like you’re painting it: stand 3–6 feet from the surface, sweep in slow overlapping passes, ceiling to floor. Moving slowly matters — the sensor refreshes continuously and a fast pan smears subtle patterns you’d otherwise catch.
When something looks interesting, square up to it. Shooting a wall at a sharp angle stretches and distorts the pattern and can add reflections; shooting it head-on gives you an honest, comparable image. Hold still for a beat, put the crosshair on the anomaly so the spot temperature is recorded in the image, then capture.
Take more photos than feels necessary, and pair each thermal capture with one step back for a context shot showing which wall or corner you’re on. After your rental we can export every image you took and email them to you — the context shots are what make the set genuinely useful later.
What separates a good scan from a great one
Contrast is everything. A thermal camera doesn’t see problems — it sees temperature differences, and problems only become visible when inside and outside differ enough to drive heat through the weak spots. Aim for at least a 15°F difference between indoors and out. In Colorado Springs that’s trivial in winter, and in summer it means scanning in the early morning cool or during a hot afternoon with the AC running.
Give the house a settled hour before scanning: close windows and exterior doors, and let the HVAC hold a steady temperature. Sun is the other variable — a wall the sun hit two hours ago is still glowing with stored heat that has nothing to do with insulation. Scan sun-struck walls before dawn or on overcast days, or simply trust interior-side scans more.
